8.2   Counterstamped Coins

Occasionally, coins are found with letters, numbers, or words punched into them. Such counterstamped pieces can be a form of inexpensive advertising for a merchant or manufacturer. Counterstamped coins can also be made to personalize a coin similar to a love token. Twenty-cent pieces with counterstamps are rare. One counterstamp that is particular to twenty-cent pieces is one that appears to alert its owner to its value.

A few examples of coins with a “20” stamped into the obverse and reverse are known, perhaps created by a merchant who did not want to mistake a twenty-cent piece for a quarter.
