8. Exonumia

This chapter explores numerous types of exonumia, including coins that are engraved, countermarked, elongated, and made into jewelry. During the 19th and early 20th century it was common for coins to be used as jewelry or to be crafted into personal mementos. Such pieces made from twenty-cent coins are rare as the coins were not generally available in commerce and it would be simpler to use a silver quarter instead. Each of these artistic uses of twenty-cent pieces are unique and reflect a personal connection to the piece and the talent of the artisan who crafted them.
