7.7   Strike-through Errors

Occasionally an object or piece of foreign matter can fall into the coining chamber. Small pieces of wire, wood, fabric, paper, and many other things have been known to fall between the planchet and die during striking. When this happens, the foreign object will be struck with the planchet, leaving an impression of the object on the finished coin. The object usually then falls out of the chamber and the process returns to normal.

Although strike-through errors on twenty-cent coins are rare, unless the result is dramatic there usually is little premium for such an error. Pictured below is a strike-through error on an 1875-P twenty-cent coin with the impression easily visible on the left side of the reverse.
