This die features a misplaced 8 high in the denticles below the date. The misplaced 8 is even with the tops of the denticles, and has a well-rounded top that curves down on both sides.

In a late die state, this obverse develops a rim break below the date

Reverse H

This reverse exhibits a high filled mintmark with a minor repunched S/S. Repunching is most obvious in the lower left and upper-right serifs.

There is also a diagonal die line below the eagle’s right (viewer’s left) wing.

This reverse also develops an extensive series of die cracks and breaks. The most noticeable areas for the cracks are atop the word UNITED and the gap between D and the first S in STATES. Two parts of the die subsequently broke away.




Late die state breaks

Comments: This die marriage is popular for building a die crack progression set. This is the only use of these obverse and reverse dies.

Scarcity: A common die marriage. Coins with advanced die cracks are difficult to locate.
Rarity rating: R-2.
