Obverse 11

This obverse features another misplaced date with the top of a misplaced 5 in the denticles below the date.

Date position with misplaced 5

Close-up of misplaced 5 in denticles

In the latest die state, a die crack develops near stars 9 and 10, to the right of Liberty’s cap. The presence of this die crack allows determination of the re-marriage of these dies, after this obverse was paired with another reverse. See the next page for details on this die crack and the re-marriage.

Date Position: M 2.5, 0.50 mm

Reverse C

This reverse has a minor repunched S/S, centrally placed between the stem and the tail of the arrow. The repunching is only noticeable at the upper-right serif. It is closer to the arrow and branch than to the Y below it.

Minor S/S

Comments: This is the first use of this obverse die and the second and final use of the reverse die. This die pairing has a known re-marriage.

This die pairing comes either with or without a die crack on the obverse. Coins without the die crack are from the original marriage and those with the die crack are from the re-marriage (see below).

Scarcity: A difficult die marriage to locate as most coins struck with this obverse were stuck with a different reverse. Rarity rating: R-3.

1875-S BF-15R (Re-marriage)

Description:

After striking coins with this reverse, the obverse was then paired with the so-called ‘$’ reverse (Reverse J). During that die pairing, the obverse developed a die crack near Stars 9 and 10 to the right of Liberty’s cap. The crack then expanded. When Reverse J developed severe die cracks of its own, it was removed and replaced with the original Reverse B. During the re-marriage, the obverse die crack expanded to its greatest extent before the die was retired.

Coins without the obverse die crack are from the original marriage and those with the die crack are from the re-marriage. Also, the presence of the misplaced 5 in the denticles weakens through die wear and is noticeably different between the original marriage and the re-marriage.

Original Marriage:(BF-15)

No die crack near stars 9 and 10

Early state of misplaced 5 in denticles
Re-marriage (BF-15R):

Die crack near stars 9 and 10

Late state of misplaced 5 in denticles

Re-marriage scarcity: Coins from the die re-marriage are scarce with about the same population as those from the original die marriage.
